This is the remains of a Junkers J-1, it looks a bit odd because both the engine and propeller are missing and the armour plating engine cover is hinged back. This was the world’s first production ‘all metal’ aeroplane and just one complete example remains (currently housed in the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum). The nose amour was 5mm thick, remarkable at the time, but interestingly only three machine guns are recorded in the specification and the two downward firing ones were apparently hardly used. Its primary role was indeed ground attack.
