Private Thomas Hughes (Connaught Rangers) receiving his VC awarded for action at Guillemont 3rd Sept 1916. "For most conspicuous bravery and determination. He was wounded in an attack but returned at once to the firing line after having his wounds dressed. Later seeing a hostile machine gun, he dashed out in front of his company, shot the gunner and single handedly captured the gun. Though again wounded, he brought back three prisoners" This photo was taken on the 2nd June 1917. In this investiture 351 awards were given, including 11 Victoria Crosses, 4 of them posthumous. 313 servicemen received their awards personally, 26 were received by relatives. There were 12 awards of the Royal Red Cross to nurses. Rare film footage of this event is still available and in which Pte Hughes can be seen talking to the King.
